Most organisers choose a wristband in ten minutes, usually by price. Then they spend the weekend dealing with what that decision caused: queues at the gate, people slipping bands off and passing them back over the fence, staff who cannot tell an accredited supplier from a guest.

The wristband is the cheapest item in your production budget and the one that touches every single attendee. Here is how to choose custom wristbands for events without guessing.

Before looking at any sample, write down what the band actually has to do at your event:

  • Identify who is who. Different access levels, staff, artists, suppliers, press.

  • Stop transfers. Whether a band can be removed and reused by someone else.

  • Survive the event. One afternoon is not the same as four days of rain, showers and sleep.

  • Do something at the gate. Scan, open a turnstile, pay at a bar, allow re-entry.

That last point is what separates a printed band from an RFID one, and it is the decision that changes everything else.

Tyvek wristbands. A paper-like synthetic that tears against the skin but resists water. Single use, adhesive closure, the lowest cost per unit. Tyvek wristbands for events are the right answer for one-day events, sports and guided tours: high volumes, low risk. They are the wrong answer for a four-day festival, because they look worn out by day two.

Fabric wristbands. Woven polyester tape with a sliding lock. Comfortable enough to sleep in, holds colour, and it is what people keep on their wrist for weeks after the event. This is the standard for multi-day festival wristbands, and the one attendees photograph.

Vinyl wristbands. Thicker plastic, fully waterproof, single use with a one-way snap. Good for water parks, pools and anywhere the band is going to be submerged.

Silicone wristbands. Reusable and comfortable, closer to a watch strap. Makes sense for staff and season passes, where the same person wears it repeatedly.

This is the part people skip. A wristband is only as secure as how it closes.

Adhesive and one-way locks are designed so that removing the band destroys it. A sliding lock on fabric tightens but does not loosen. If your band can be slipped over a hand intact, you do not have access control, you have decoration.

Ask for the closure type before you ask for the price. Two bands that look identical in a photo can behave completely differently at the gate.

An RFID band carries a chip that a reader picks up without contact. It lets you validate entry in under a second, control re-entry, run cashless payments at bars, and see live occupancy data instead of guessing.

What RFID wristbands do not do is fix a badly planned entrance. If you have two gates for eight thousand people, RFID will not save you.

For events, the usual chip works at 13.56 MHz, the same family as contactless cards. The older 125 kHz chips are still around and cheaper, but they carry less data and integrate with fewer platforms. If you are already working with a ticketing or access control provider, ask them which chip their readers expect before ordering anything. Getting this wrong means a delivery of bands that your own gates cannot read.

Send vector artwork. Logos rebuilt from a JPEG never look the way the designer intended, and on a 15 mm strip every defect is visible.

Two things worth deciding early: whether your brand colour needs a Pantone match or whether CMYK is close enough, and whether the design needs to survive being folded around a wrist. Fine lines and small text lose definition on fabric, which is woven, in a way they do not on Tyvek, which is printed flat.

If you are running sponsors on the band, get their files at the same time as yours. Sponsor artwork is a common cause of delay.

Whatever number you land on, it is not the number you should order. Bands get lost between the car park and the gate, they snap while someone is putting them on, and box office always needs a handful to solve problems on the spot. Running out of event wristbands at nine in the evening on the first day is a problem with no good solution.

Add a margin over your expected attendance, and add it before you order rather than after. Reprinting a small top-up run costs more per unit than the original order and arrives when the event is already over.

Two things worth planning for. First, keep the spares at the box office and not in a storage container on the other side of the site. Second, if your bands are printed with a date or a specific edition, leftovers cannot be used next year. If you think you will want to reuse them, ask for a design without the year on it before production starts.

The mistake that costs the most money is not choosing the wrong material. It is deciding too late and paying for air freight to fix it.

Custom production takes time, and the timeline depends on the material, the print, whether a chip has to be encoded, and how the goods travel. Sea and air are different worlds in both cost and calendar.

Choose by what the band has to do at the gate, then by how long it has to last, then by how it closes. Price is the last filter, not the first.

You can see every material, closure and chip option in our catalogue.

If you tell us your event size, how many days it runs and whether you need scanning at the gate, we can tell you which of these makes sense for you and which is overkill.
